The Oil & Gas Year
Editorial Watercolor Illustration (Malaysia 2015 Edition)
This watercolor artwork depicts the Gumusut-Kakap Floating Production System (FPS), a cornerstone of Malaysia’s offshore oil and gas industry. Operated by Shell, this deepwater semi-submersible platform marked Malaysia’s first deepwater development and one of Asia’s most technologically advanced offshore assets at the time of its launch.
Due to the challenges of capturing high-quality photography offshore—especially of moving structures and floating systems—this piece served as a vital visual solution for The Oil & Gas Year’s editorial. The artwork blends structural fidelity with watercolor textures to evoke both the engineering excellence and environmental context of the FPS. By transforming cold steel into a dynamic composition of color and movement, it highlights the scale, functionality, and maritime integration of Gumusut-Kakap, contributing to a more accessible visual narrative for readers.
