  • Nazar – The Power of Gaze, 2007

  • Created during the second year of my BA, "Nazar" is a gravure print series inspired by the cultural symbolism of the eye — particularly the "nazar" (evil eye) motif. Through textured print layers and repeated forms, the work explores how individuals are shaped, judged, or trapped by the gazes of others. It blends traditional belief with modern commentary on identity, vulnerability, and external perception.

  • This piece reflects the tension between dignity and exposure — between being seen and being consumed by that gaze. "Nazar" is not just protection from harm, but a mirror to how we internalize others’ perspectives.

  • To translate an invisible cultural and emotional weight — the psychological effect of being watched, judged, or idealized — into a tactile, layered visual language using printmaking techniques.

    • Translating abstract emotion into visual rhythm

    • Mastering gravure’s technical limitations with limited materials

    • Capturing psychological nuance in a format that’s often rigid and formal

    • Developed a conceptual language within gravure

    • Successfully balanced cultural symbolism with personal narrative

    • Pushed the print medium into expressive territory, using repetition and distortion to evoke emotional entrapment and resilience
