THE OIL & GAS YEAR
This infographic, created for the Al Shaheen Oilfield project, visualizes one of the world’s most complex offshore oil fields. Spanning 2,214 square kilometers, it showcases a network of 33 platforms, over 300 wells, and 9 platform locations. Designed without photographic references and using only a 5KB legacy facility map, the goal was to translate raw technical data into a digestible, visually engaging isometric diagram. Every detail—from pipeline types to platform functions—was reconstructed with clarity and scale in mind, aiding stakeholders in navigating this vast infrastructure.
See how design can turn even the most complex engineering schematics into a compelling visual narrative. This piece became a reference for understanding the scale of Al Shaheen—boosting internal communications and project clarity for operators and partners.
Transforming a near-unreadable technical wireframe into an intuitive infographic, this project proves how strategic design can bring clarity to complexity. It maps a massive offshore ecosystem into a format that speaks to engineers, executives, and investors alike—bridging understanding across roles.
To visually decode and humanize the immense technical infrastructure of the Al Shaheen oilfield for non-technical stakeholders—making it easier to align operations, investments, and planning efforts.
-
The only available source was a low-resolution (5KB) schematic with no visual references or documentation.
-
Spatial orientation and structural hierarchy of the platforms had to be reverse-engineered from raw data.
-
The challenge of illustrating multiple offshore flow types—oil, gas, water injection, power, and returns—without visual clutter.
-
Needed to maintain technical accuracy while also creating an engaging and readable layout for both technical and non-technical audiences.
-
-
Developed a custom isometric icon system to distinguish platform types and flow lines clearly.
-
Successfully reconstructed over 30 platforms and 300 wells into a cohesive, comprehensible layout.
-
Created a scalable, publication-ready map that visually unified disconnected information into a single field-level narrative.
-
The final infographic was used in editorial features, internal briefings, and presentations, helping project managers, executives, and planners gain quick insight into the full operational landscape.
